Starting a home project can feel overwhelming: where do you begin, what tools and materials do you need, and how do you make sure it’s done right? That’s where BuildYourSelf comes in. This women-owned business, founded by interior designers Maggie and Sarah, exists to do more than help homeowners complete projects; they want to empower their clients to feel confident tackling tasks on their own. Their mission is to make DIY approachable, achievable, and even enjoyable, giving homeowners the skills and reassurance they need to take on projects with pride. When asked about it, Maggie expressed, “The skills we are offering are not often taught unless you plan to go into the construction field. We think everyone should have the skills required to do basic home maintenance and have the confidence to make their home personal to them.”
With backgrounds in interior architecture and design, and with over a decade of renovation and remodeling experience, Maggie and Sarah bring a wealth of knowledge to every project. Both are passionate DIYers themselves, and they started BuildYourSelf because they love seeing others gain that same sense of accomplishment and confidence. For them, the joy isn’t just in finishing a project, it’s in helping their clients grow their skills, try new things, and discover what they’re capable of.
BuildYourSelf offers hands-on instruction for all types of DIY projects. For projects that require professional oversight, they provide contractor handoffs, which include preparing all the designs, plans, and documentation needed for a smooth transition to a general contractor. And because the right tools make all the difference, they offer tool training and rentals, showing clients which tools to use, how to use them safely, and how to gain independence in their own projects.
Their approach takes the intimidation out of DIY. “When it comes to DIY, I think the fear of making a mistake, the overwhelm of not knowing where to start, and the hidden time and money it can take to get things right can all paralyze people” says Sarah. After a free 45-minute consultation and project intake, Maggie and Sarah help break projects down into manageable steps, provide a list of materials needed and schedule site visits. The site visits allow for hands-on instruction, demonstrations, and follow-ups to ensure clients feel supported at every stage. From small updates—like installing molding, changing faucets, or updating light fixtures—to larger renovation projects, BuildYourSelf’s goal is always the same: to help clients feel capable, supported, and confident enough to take the next step on their own.
Maggie, who has a master’s degree in Interior Architecture & Interior Design from Drexel University, and Sarah, who has an interior design degree from Marymount University, are both award winning designers who have combined their expertise with genuine enthusiasm for teaching. They celebrate every client’s progress, from the first consultation to the final walkthrough, and take pride in sharing their knowledge so clients can succeed independently.
At BuildYourSelf, every project is more than an item to check off a to do list—it’s a chance to build skills, confidence, and self-reliance. By blending professional guidance, hands-on support, and education, Maggie and Sarah show homeowners that with the right plan, the right tools, and encouragement, they really can build it themselves.
